A peer team at another company does the same work for under $1 per item. You know your Cost Structure. You know your Cost Per Unit. Now the question is: which parts of that $11 can you kill, and what does it take to get there?

What It Is

Cost Reduction is the act of permanently lowering the cost to produce, process, or deliver one unit of output.

This is not the same as cost cutting. Cost cutting is subtractive - you remove people, cancel tools, defer maintenance. Cost Reduction is structural - you change the process so the cost never occurs.

The distinction matters because cost cutting often increases your Error Cost and defect rate downstream.
